Christ, The Cornerstone of our Worship

Zechariah inspires the remnant of God’s people to finish rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem. How could they accomplish such a task? By the power of God’s Spirit. The Apostle Peter knew well the prophecy, and he connects the Temple with the new work God is doing in us. We realize that Jesus came as Israel’s Messiah, not to defeat the earthly power of Rome, but to defeat the spiritual power of sin and death. Our bodies are the precious temple of God and Christ is the Cornerstone.

Call to Worship

† Hymn 69 — Crown Him with Many Crowns

Crown him with many crowns, the Lamb upon his throne.
Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of him who died for thee,
and hail him as thy matchless king through all eternity.

Crown him the Lord of life, who triumphed o'er the grave,
and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save;
His glories now we sing who died and rose on high,
who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.

Crown him the Lord of love; behold his hands and side,
rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified;
No angels in the sky can fully bear that sight,
but downward bends their burning eye at mysteries so bright.

Crown him the Lord of years, the potentate of time,
creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail! for thou hast died for me;
thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity.

† Passing of the Peace

Turn to those near you and share “the Peace of the Lord be with you.”

Scripture Reading — Zechariah 4:1-7

Page 1446 in pew Bible

Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep. He asked me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps. Also, there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.” I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?” He answered, “Do you not know what these are?” “No, my lord,” I replied. So, he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty. “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’

Offertory

In addition to giving via passed offering plates, you are also welcome to give online.

† Doxology

Praise God from Whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him all creatures here below,
Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

New Testament Reading — 1 Peter 2:4-6

Page 1847 in pew Bible

As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”

Choral Anthem — Will the Circle Be Unbroken

Wagner

(Refrain) Will the circle be unbroken by and by, Lord, by and by?
There’s a better home awaitin’ in the sky, Lord, in the sky.

There are loved ones in the glory whose dear forms you often miss.
When you close your earthly story will you join them in their bliss? (Refrain)

In the days of joyous childhood oft’ they told of wondrous love,
Pointed to the dying Savior, now they dwell with Him above. (Refrain)

You remember songs of heaven which you sang with childlike voice.
Do you love the hymns they taught you, or are songs of earth your choice? (Refrain)

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer

Hymn 479, Stanzas 1-3, 5 — Jesus Shall Reign

Jesus shall reign where'er the sun does its successive journeys run,
his kingdom stretch from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and wane no more.

To him shall endless prayer be made, and praises throng to crown his head.
His name like sweet perfume shall rise with every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of every tongue dwell on his love with sweetest song,
and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name.

Let every creature rise and bring the highest honors to our King,
angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the loud amen.

† Inside Back Cover of Hymnal — Let There be Peace on Earth

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me;
Let there be peace on earth the peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father, Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now;
With every step I take let this be my solemn vow.

To take each moment and live each moment in peace, eternally,
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

Next Sunday is Friendship Sunday

Next Sunday is Friendship Sunday

Each fall, as members return to Mariner Sands for the winter, we invite friends and family to a special service that honors and encourages Christian fellowship as we build our community. Studies show that a large percentage of people start attending church because a friend invited them! So, step out in faith and boldly invite people to visit and see what God can do for them at Mariner Sands Chapel.
